Technical pics

Various pics from my 1987 Cushman Haulster model 898456.

The Haulster came with an 18 or 22 hp engine. This is the later 22 hp engine, which is identified by the spark plugs being on top of the engine.

When I changed the oil the last time, I used a Fram PH16 oil filter. The Wal-Mart brand equivalent is the Super Tech ST16. Many many other oil filters will work. Due to limited room for maneuvering, I had to use the end cap type of oil filter wrench that uses your ratchet. I raised the vehicle on the left side with a floor jack to access the filter from underneath.

The scooter was missing the windshield wiper arm so I bought an Anco 41-02 wiper arm and Anco 20-12 (12 inch) wiper blade.  The arm fit the Cushman's splined shaft perfectly. The blade is a tad too short so I'll probably go back and get a 14 inch wiper blade. Knowing this info will save you the trouble of removing the wiper motor like I did. I did this so I could just take it to the auto parts store and be able to get the right fit the first time without making another trip. This will also save you big bucks paying for the original Cushman replacement.
Before installing the wiper arm, turn on the wiper motor and watch it go back and forth and try to stop it in the middle of its cycle. Install the arm straight up and down and you should have it about right.

The original 5 inch mirrors were way too small and were discolored, so I replaced them with 8 inch concave mirrors. They fit right on the original Cushman mirror brackets. The new mirrors are from Peterson Mfg. Co and were bought at a Parts Plus chain. Many other mirrors are available at various chains, such as rectangular, which I actually like better.

The vehicle had no horn so I installed a Blazer high tone horn (model BH101HC) from a Parts Plus auto supply (under $20). I put it behind the front grill between the headlights. It is nice and loud. I mounted a generic horn button in the center of the steering wheel with two screws.

  2. I've sold the Cushman but I never had to look for the number and I'm not sure where it's at. When I got a title, all I needed was the VIN that's visible in the cab.

  4. I no longer use Fram air filters. They are poor quality.
